Umid Support to Social Development Public Union

“Umid” Support to Social Development Public Union (“Umid” SSD PU) is an independent national non-governmental organization (NGO) of Azerbaijan working to help the marginalized segment of the population, in resolving their basic needs and social problems, improving the education condition, developing communities, creating economic opportunities for the people etc.

The organization launched its activity in a small-displaced community in Sumgait area in 1997 with implementation of a small-scale lending project. “Umid” initiated a reputation for successful performance and innovation with this project and has grown ever since. On 6 March 1998, the organization was officially registered at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Umid’s mission is to foster solution of social, economic and education problems of vulnerable people. Main aims of the organization are to expand economic and employment opportunities via delivery of Business Development Services (BDS) (training, consultation, mentoring and coaching), apprenticeship activities, credit linkage activities and networking; to inspire target communities to ensure their self-sufficiency via developing them to initiate solutions for addressing their social, educational and economic needs; to increase community literacy via involving them to educative and awareness raising activities; to ensure development of formal and informal institutions via enhancing their organizational, institutional and managerial capacities through sustainable and professional technical assistance; to assist institutions and communities to become transparent, participatory, responsible and self-sustaining.

Thus, “Umid” Support to Social Development Public Union has been continuously operating for 18 years and cooperates with the governmental authorities of Azerbaijan Republic (Cabinet of Ministers (CM), Council of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Ministry of Education (MoE) etc.), European Union (EU), British Petroleum (BP), The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and United Nations bodies (United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) etc.). The organization was the national winner of “The 2007 World Award for Sustainability” – the Energy Globe with “Improvement of Access to Potable Water” project.

Israyil Isgandarov

Israyil Isa Isgandarov joined Open Government Platform in September 2017 as a Platform member. Mr. Isgandarov works as an Executive Director of the “Umid” Support to Social Development Public Union since 1997. Moreover, it is already 5 years (2011 – to present) he works as Head of the Department of Management in Azerbaijan Tourism and Management University. Previously he worked as a Program Assistant on Income Generation, Business/Management/Monitoring/Tax System/Accounting in Danish Refugee Council (DRC) from 1997 to 1998. Mr. Isgandarov was Senior Referent in Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan from 1995 to 1997. Prior to it, he worked in various roles (Scientific researcher, Senior scientific researcher, Head of Automation and Technological Procedures Sector) in Scientific-Research Institute of Water Problems from 1981 to 1998.

He holds PhD in Mathematics from Azerbaijan National Academy of Science, Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics.
