Humanitarian Research Public Union

The Humanitarian Research Public Union (former: Society for Humanitarian Research) is a non-governmental organization founded on January 17, 1997. The organization was officially registered on 14 April 2000. The mission of HRPU: to achieve the democratic changes in the society and make more sustainable of participation of the citizens in the process of protection of human rights and freedoms and establishment of the civil society by growing and development of the civic activity.

The main objectives of the organization are:

democratic development of the society, study of the conditions for participation of the people in building civil society, human rights, migration, conducting monitoring of the development of the third sector;

preparation of the programs enabling the citizens to obtain legal knowledge;

providing free legal service to the population, especially migrants, refugees and the internally displaced.

The organization carries out its activity according to the structure noted in the Charter registered and confirmed with the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan Republic. The supreme body of the organization is a general Meeting convened once in a year. The Board of Management consisting of 7 persons accomplishing the management of the organization is elected by the General Meeting and is consisted of 5 men and 2 women. The program director and heads of several departments are women. At the same time, the number of women amongst the volunteers is 35%.

Since 1997 the Organization of Humanitarian Researches adjusted cooperation with the international organizations, and subsequently became their members, or has entered into their networks.

Avaz Hasanov

Avaz Hasanov joined Open Governement in September 2016.  He is the Director of Humanitarian Research Public Union since 1997. He is also Country Representative of Working Group on Search of Prisoners of War (POW) from 2000 until now, where he negotiates in releasing/exchange of prisoners, visits the places of detention of both real and presumed POW/hostages and assist POW/hostages to return to his/her native land and their rehabilitation. Prior to it, Mr. Hasanov was Vice Director of Human Rights Centre of Azerbaijan (HRCA) from 1993 to 2000. He was a project coordinator in HAYAT International Resource Centre for NGOs working on migration issues from 1997 through 1998. In 1998, he was a member of the working group on Migration Potential of Azerbaijan Republic. Between 1995 and 1996, he was an Expert in Department of Youth Problems in the Ministry of Youth, Tourism and Sport. Also, Mr. Hasanov was an Expert in Problems of Refugees and IDP’s of the Helsinki Citizens Assembly Azerbaijan National Committee (HCA ANK) from 1993-1995.

Mr. Hasanov holds BA in Cultural Educational Work from Azerbaijan State Cultural Institute. He has certificates from several local and international trainings and workshops.
